🏔️ Range & Performance
“How far can these radios actually talk?” The answer depends more on your surroundings than the radio itself.
Realistic Range Expectations
| Environment | Typical Range |
|---|---|
| Indoor to Indoor | 2-5 floors |
| Dense Urban (City) | 0.5 - 1 mile |
| Suburban (Neighborhood) | 1 - 2 miles |
| Open Field / Water | 3 - 5 miles |
| Hilltop to Hilltop | 10+ miles |
| Using a Repeater | 20 - 50 miles |
📈 Tips to Increase Range
- Get High: Elevation is everything. Standing on a hill or the top floor of a building will double or triple your range.
- Hold it Vertical: Keep the antenna pointing straight up. Holding the radio sideways can reduce your signal by 90%.
- Upgrade the Antenna: The factory “rubber duck” antenna is mediocre. Consider a Nagoya NA-771 for a significant performance boost.
🔋 Maximizing Battery Life
- Low Power Mode: If you are only talking to someone in the same building, use CHIRP to set the channel to “Low Power” (0.5W).
- Turn off VOX: Voice-activated transmission (VOX) keeps the microphone constantly listening, which drains the battery faster.
- Battery Saver: Ensure the “Battery Saver” option is enabled in the CHIRP Settings tab.
