🟢 Level 1: The Operator (Beginner)

Welcome to the world of radio! If you just got your Arcshell AR-5 or BaoFeng BF-888S, this is the place to start. You don’t need to be an engineer to use these—you just need to know the basics.

📖 What You’ll Learn

  • How to set up your radio for the first time.
  • The 3 rules of “Radio Etiquette.”
  • How to maximize your battery life.

🚀 Quick Start Essentials

1. The “First Charge” Rule

Always charge your radios for a full 3 hours before first use. Even if the light is green, let it “trickle charge” to ensure the battery cells are balanced.

2. Know Your Knobs

  • Right Knob: Power + Volume. Turn it clockwise to turn on.
  • Left Knob: Channel Selector. There are 16 positions.
  • PTT (Push-To-Talk): The big button on the left side. Hold for 1 second before you start talking.

🎙️ Radio Etiquette 101

Talking on a radio is different than a phone. Only one person can talk at a time.

  1. Listen Before You Talk: Make sure no one else is using the channel before you press the button.
  2. Be Brief: Say what you need to say and let go of the button.
  3. Say “Over”: This tells the other person you are finished talking and it’s their turn.

🔋 Beginner Pro-Tips

  • Antenna Safety: Never turn on the radio or press the PTT button without the antenna attached. This can “burn out” the internal transmitter.
  • Clear Audio: Hold the radio 2-3 inches away from your mouth and speak across the microphone, not directly into it, to avoid “popping” sounds.

  1. Read the Getting Started guide.
  2. Review the Radio Etiquette page.
  3. Learn about Legal Requirements.
