👥 Clones & Variants Guide

The BaoFeng BF-888S is one of the most rebranded radios in the world. While dozens of companies sell this radio under different names, they are not always 100% compatible in terms of hardware accessories.

🟢 What is Always the Same?

Regardless of the brand on the sticker, almost all “888s” variants share these internal specs:

  • Internals: The same UHF (400–470 MHz) circuitry and ~2W power output.
  • Programming: All use the same Kenwood K1 (2-pin) programming cable. In CHIRP, they are almost always identified as BaoFeng -> BF-888S.
  • Antenna: Standard SMA-Female connector.
  • Audio: 2-pin K1 standard for earpieces, speaker mics, and headsets.

🔴 What is Often Different?

This is where users run into trouble. Companies often change the exterior plastic or charging method to “lock” you into their brand.

1. The Charging Method

  • Cradle-Only: Older models require a desktop cradle with a barrel plug AC adapter.
  • USB-C (Cradle): Modern cradles are powered by a standard USB-C cable.
  • USB-C (Direct): Many Arcshell and Pxton models now have a USB-C port directly on the radio or battery, allowing you to charge without a cradle.

2. Battery & Cradle Compatibility

  • Physical Fit: While the batteries look identical, the plastic “tabs” that lock the battery to the radio can vary by a fraction of a millimeter. A BaoFeng battery usually fits an Arcshell, but it might be loose or require force.
  • Cradle Rails: The charging cradles are often vendor-specific. An Arcshell radio might not slide into a Retevis cradle due to slight differences in the side rails.

📦 List of Known Clones

If your radio looks like the one on our Home Page, it is likely one of these models:

Arcshell AR-5

The most popular “premium” clone. Typically ships with high-quality USB-C rechargeable batteries and a more rugged-feeling shell.

Pxton PX-888S

Very common on Amazon. Newer versions feature direct USB-C charging on the battery. Internally identical to the BF-888S.

Retevis H-777

One of the oldest clones. Often sold in large 10-packs for businesses. Uses the classic BF-888S battery mount.

BaoFeng BF-666S / BF-777S

Identical internals to the 888s but with a slightly different front shell design. Mostly cosmetic differences.

TIDRADIO TD-V2

A well-built variant often sold with better antennas than the stock BaoFeng version.

Radioddity GA-2S

A variant that popularized Micro-USB (and now USB-C) charging on the radio body itself.

Greentest GT-1

A budget variant often found in international markets with identical 888s specs.

Etekwear / Neocue / Others

You will find dozens of “no-name” brands on eBay and AliExpress. If it has 16 channels and no screen, it’s almost certainly a BF-888S clone.

💡 Recommendation

If you are buying radios for a team, stick to one brand. While they can all talk to each other (once programmed), having mismatched chargers and batteries is a logistical headache.
